Brake dust is the dark, gritty residue that accumulates on your wheels from normal braking. It's made up of carbon fibers, metal particles, and adhesive residue from your brake pads. Left untreated, brake dust can permanently stain and corrode your wheels. Here's how to fight back.
Why Brake Dust Is Harmful
Brake dust is slightly acidic and becomes more corrosive when it heats up during braking. Over time, it can etch into wheel finishes, especially on alloy wheels. The longer you leave it, the harder it is to remove.
How to Remove Brake Dust
For Light Buildup
- Rinse the wheel with water to loosen surface dust
- Apply a pH-neutral or iron-dissolving wheel cleaner
- Let it dwell for 2-3 minutes (you'll see it turn purple as it reacts with iron particles)
- Agitate with a soft wheel brush
- Rinse thoroughly and dry
For Heavy, Baked-On Buildup
- Use a dedicated iron remover/fallout remover spray
- Let it dwell for 5 minutes
- Agitate with a stiff-bristle wheel brush
- Repeat if necessary
- Follow up with a standard wheel cleaner
- Rinse and dry thoroughly
How to Prevent Brake Dust Buildup
- Apply a wheel sealant or ceramic coating: Creates a barrier that prevents dust from bonding
- Clean regularly: Weekly cleaning prevents buildup from hardening
- Upgrade to low-dust brake pads: Ceramic brake pads produce significantly less dust than semi-metallic pads
