What Is Wheel Offset?
Wheel offset is the distance (in millimeters) between the wheel's hub mounting surface and its centerline. It's one of the most critical measurements when selecting aftermarket wheels, yet it's often misunderstood.
Types of Offset
Positive Offset
The mounting surface is closer to the front (street side) of the wheel. Most modern front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles use positive offset. Example: +42mm offset on a Touren TR9 wheel.
Zero Offset
The mounting surface is exactly at the centerline of the wheel. Common on older vehicles and some trucks.
Negative Offset
The mounting surface is toward the back of the wheel, pushing the wheel outward. This is popular for off-road trucks and gives an aggressive, wide stance. Example: -24mm offset on XD XD820 wheels.
How Offset Affects Your Vehicle
- Too much positive offset: Wheel tucks inward, may rub on suspension
- Too much negative offset: Wheel sticks out, may rub on fenders and affect handling
- Correct offset: Proper clearance, optimal handling, and great looks
Finding the Right Offset
