When installing new wheels, most people focus on fitment, offset, and looks. But one of the most critical — and most overlooked — aspects of wheel installation is proper lug nut torque. Getting this wrong can be dangerous.

What Is Torque?

Torque is the rotational force applied when tightening a lug nut. It's measured in foot-pounds (ft-lbs) or Newton-meters (Nm). Each vehicle has a specific torque specification for its lug nuts, and exceeding or under-tightening can cause serious problems.

What Happens If Lug Nuts Are Too Tight?

  • Warped brake rotors from uneven clamping force
  • Stretched or broken wheel studs

The Right Way to Torque Your Wheels

  1. Hand-tighten all lug nuts in a star pattern
  2. Use a torque wrench to tighten to 50% of the final spec in a star pattern
  3. Torque to the full specification in a star pattern
  4. Re-torque after driving 50-100 miles
